Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 12/11 @
Two sides who are seeking a much-needed boost this weekend, Coritiba will welcome Santos to the Couto Pereira on Saturday night.
Starting with the hosts, although Coritiba might have clung to their Serie A status last season, the Coxa appeared destined for another relegation scrap in 2023. Only continuing to show a string of domestic issues since opening the 2023 campaign, Antonio Carlos Zago’s side already sit rock-bottom of the table and tipped as a landslide contender to be hit with a second-tier return this time around. Last seen putting in another worrying display as they slumped to a routine 3-1 loss away at Brazilian giants Palmeiras, the Parana-based outfit have remarkably failed to collect a single win from any of their first nine Serie A appearances. Likewise, putting just three points on the board from a possible 27, the one-time Roma coach knows that he has a major job on his hands at the Couto Pereira. Signing off May with a 2-1 defeat at home against Atletico-MG, Zago has seen his side gain a reputation for their lively outcomes. In fact, Coritiba have seen each of their previous seven straight top-flight showdowns finish with both teams finding the net.
As for the visitors, while Santos might have opened the 2023 campaign with a flurry, Odair Hellmann’s side have largely come crashing back down to earth. Crashing out of the Copa Sudamericana earlier in the week as they suffered a 2-1 loss at home against Argentinian outfit Newells Old Boys, the Peixe have failed to muster a single win from any of their previous seven appearances across all competitions. With that run stemming back to May 14th, the former Fluminense boss has also seen his side show some rather glaring issues at the back. Along with suffering Copa do Brasil heartbreak at the hands of Bahia last month, the Whites are without a clean sheet to their name over the past three weeks. However, despite their recent rut, Santos should be excited by an eye-catching record against Saturday’s hosts. Clinching a 2-1 win when they last traveled to the Couto Pereira 10 months ago, Hellmann’s side have won five of their last six meetings against the relegation scrappers.
